45+ Years of Playing, Performing, and Teaching Guitar

From my father’s church music group to international stages, music has
been my life’s journey. Now I’m sharing what I’ve learned with students
in Irvine who want real progress, not random YouTube tutorials.

My Musical Journey

I’ve been playing guitar for over 45 years, starting with my father’s church music group as a teenager. Those early years taught me that music is about more than technique—it’s about connecting with people and serving the moment.

As a music performance major in college, I studied theory, composition, and performance in multiple jazz bands and ensembles. This formal training gave me the foundation I bring to every lesson.

Since then, I’ve performed with accomplished musicians like Martin Fierro (Quicksilver Messenger Service), played in Grateful Dead tribute bands across Southern California, performed in blues clubs in Bangkok, and played everything from church services to benefit concerts.

I’m currently active in two bands—Fez (jazz/funk/jam) and Sonic Space (funk rock)—because I believe the best teachers are those who are still out there playing and learning.

That’s what I bring to your lessons: 45+ years of real-world experience, formal training, and a genuine passion for helping you become the guitarist you want to be.

Where It All Began

Brazoswood High Stage Band – 1984

My musical journey started in my father’s church music group, playing for Sunday services, nursing homes, and even a prison performance I’ll never forget. By high school, I was playing in the stage band, marching band, and multiple rock bands—learning discipline, theory, and the joy of performing.

Four Decades of Performance Experience

I’ve played everywhere from church basements to international stages, and every experience has made me a better teacher.

Continuous Learning from the Best

Even after 45 years of playing, I’m constantly studying and improving. I’ve learned from world-class guitarists including:

  • Allen Hinds – Musicians Institute instructor, session legend (Natalie Cole, The Crusaders)
  • Jeff Richman – Berklee-trained fusion master with decades of jazz-fusion recordings
  • Mike Miller – Chick Corea’s Elektric Band, genre-bending virtuoso
  • Jon Herington – Steely Dan’s guitarist since 1999

During COVID, I participated in monthly masterclasses where Jon Herington and Allen Hinds personally critiqued my playing in front of all participants. That’s the level of knowledge and dedication I bring to your lessons.

My Teaching Philosophy

01.

🎸 Real-World Experience

I’m not teaching from books—I’m sharing knowledge from 45+ years of actual performance. You’ll learn what actually works on stage and in real musical situations.

02.

🎯 Patient and Personalized

Every student is different. Whether you want to play campfire songs or complex jazz solos, I’ll meet you where you are and help you get where you want to go.

03.

📚 Still Learning, Still Playing

I’m currently active in two bands and continuously studying with world-class players. The best teachers are those who are still passionate students themselves.
